Phrase of Everything
Nerhol is an artist unit formed in 2007 and composed of graphic designer Yoshihisa Tanaka and sculptor Ryuta Iida. The former builds the conceptual framework of their output, while the latter carves it into being. In this case, the results of this collaboration are thickly layered portraits of a single subject photographed for the duration of several minutes. The outcome of this process is 200 images, which then are printed, bound and then sheared off, layer by layer, to produce the final, dizzying portrait. Thus the identity revealed in these portraits is not permanent, but rather one that remains in continuous flux, produced both by the passage of time and Nerhols own whims.
