Apples and Olives
The docile subjects of Friedlander’s photographic essay are apple trees from New York State and olive trees from France, Italy and Spain taken between 1997 and 2004. Photographed in different seasons ranging from sunny, full leafed summer days to icy, deep winter solitude, these trees also form the groundwork for an investigation into the role of light and shadow in Friedlander’s oeuvre.
