Morimura studied at the Kyoto City University of Arts, Japan. Situated between photography and performance, his work subverts well-known images from painting and cinema by replacing their faces with his own, thus engaging in a trenchant satire on contemporary society. His work is exhibited in the permanent collections of, among other institutions, the J. Paul Getty Museum, in Los Angeles, USA and the Whitney Museum of American Art, in New York, USA.
