Homma studied photography at the Nihon University College of Art, in Japan. His photographs are always in vivid colour, a feature extensive to his generation of Japanese photographers, while his gaze is deadpan, almost coolly detached. In 1999 he won the Kimura Ihei Commemorative Photography Award for Tokyo Suburbia (1995-98), a series portraying the city’s sprawling anonymous suburbs. Enigmatic in their apparent calm, these images of the outskirts of the city reveal the gap between individual dreams and social reality.
