A war photographer during World War II, after leaving the army Aarons moved to California and began photographing celebrities or, as he said himself, "photographing attractive people doing attractive things in attractive places". His work boasts a striking casualness and mastery in capturing the stylised poses that old masters had used since the days of Titian and Velázquez, translating them into the language of 20th century glossy magazines.
