Araki. Untitled, from the series Subway, 1963-72.
Themes of love, sex, death, consumption, natural beauty, and femininity have inspired Araki since his days as a student of film and photography in the early 1960s. Never willing to compromise his vision, Araki uses photography to enhance and record the strong emotional reactions he has to the subject of life and death. Nobuyoshi Araki has been active in publishing, photography and filmmaking since his first solo exhibition in 1965 in Japan. He is extraordinarily prolific, and has published over 300 books of photographs.
