Jonas Mekas is internationally renowned as a filmmaker, critic, editor, distributor, archivist and poet. He is one of the leading figures of independent and avant-garde cinema. As a filmmaker he has won international recognition for his work, which has been shown extensively at festivals, galleries and museums around the world such as the Venice Biennale, Italy; Tate Modern in London, UK; the Whitney Museum and the Museum of Modern Art in New York, USA. In l954 he co-founded Film Culture magazine as editor-in-chief, and in 1958 began his ‘Movie Journal’ column for New York’s Village Voice newspaper. Mekas also co-founded the Filmmakers’ Cooperative, the Filmmakers’ Cinematheque and Anthology Film Archives.
