Bartos’ images reveal the complexity and details of the world today, capturing small yet significant pauses in bustling cities like Paris or Los Angeles. His work has been seen in solo exhibitions at the Yossi Milo Gallery, New York, USA; Galerie Thierry Marlat, Paris, France and Rose Gallery, Santa Monica, California, USA. He has published six monographs, including Darkroom (Steidldangin, 2011).
"I began working on this series of pictures in Los Angeles after moving from New York City in late 1978. I spent most of my time driving around looking for pictures and getting acclimatised. The look of LA was familiar to me from television and fi lm, and I was constantly comparing the real LA to the mythic one in my mind’s eye. Perhaps this imbued rather nondescript places with a kind of signifi cance and ‘authenticity’ that suited my documentary approach with the large format camera. There is a quality of solitude in the photographs that accurately reflects that period as well." ADAM BARTOS
