Richard Buckminster ‘Bucky’ Fuller (1895-1983) was an American genius who defied categorisation. He could be described variously as a green environmentalist, a prophetic visionary, a poet, architect, mathematician, map-maker and teacher, although he is most popularly known for his geodesic domes.
I was privileged to collaborate with Bucky for the last 12 years of his life and this had a profound influence on my own work and thinking. Inevitably, I also gained an insight into his philosophy and achievements. With Luis Fernández-Galiano, my co-curator for this exhibition, we have tried to show Bucky and the broad range of his work in the context of his time.
Bucky’s early career coincided with the streamline age which touched everything from the design of Zeppelins and aircraft to cars and trains and even houses. We reveal how these designs set the scene for some of his most radical proposals in the late 1920s and ‘30s. The exhibition charts the key chapters of Bucky’s long career using photographs, original drawings, models and structures together with the recently completed recreation of his futuristic Dymaxion Car, which is shown here for the first time.
In 1951 Fuller drew attention to the ecological issues of today when he referred to ‘spaceship earth’ and the fragility of the planet, as such his work and observations are even more important now than they were in his lifetime. |

Richard Buckminster “Bucky” Fuller (1895-1983) fue un gran genio americano para el que no existe etiqueta alguna. Se podría describir como ecologista, profeta, visionario, arquitecto, poeta, matemático, cartógrafo y maestro, aunque es mucho mas conocido por sus cúpulas geodésicas.
Tuve el privilegio de colaborar con Bucky durante los doce últimos años de su vida, quien influyó profundamente en mi trabajo y mi manera de pensar. Inevitablemente, también adquirí una visión cercana a su filosofía y sus logros. En colaboración con Luis Fernández-Galiano, co-comisario de esta exposición, Bucky Fuller & Spaceship Earth, he intentado presentar a Bucky y la amplitud de su trabajo en el contexto de su época.
Los inicios de la carrera de Bucky coincidieron con la era aerodinámica, un campo que abarcó desde el diseño de dirigibles y aviones, a coches, trenes, e incluso, la construcción de viviendas. Esta muestra en Ivorypress Art + Books, recoge los diseños que prepararon el terreno para algunas de sus propuestas más radicales de los años veinte y treinta del siglo pasado. La exposición acoge los capítulos claves de la larga trayectoria de Bucky utilizando originales -fotos, dibujos, películas, maquetas y estructuras-, así como el modelo recién terminado de su futurista Dymaxion Car, que se muestra en Ivorypress Art + Books por primera vez.
En 1951, Fuller puso de relieve los temas ecológicos, que hoy día son vitales en nuestra cultura, cuando se refirió a la Nave Espacial Tierra y a la fragilidad de nuestro planeta. Tanto su trabajo como sus observaciones son actualmente aún más importantes de lo que fueron durante su vida. |
